Modern Redux: A Journey Through Post-War Modernism

Modern Redux, a distinguished gallery specializing in post-war international modernism, traces its roots back to Redux Vintage, a modest shop founded in 1992 by visionary entrepreneur Kelly Locker. Inspired by his passion for preserving and re-popularizing great modern design, Locker’s journey through the world of mid-20th Century Modern furnishings has been nothing short of remarkable.

In the early days, Redux Vintage emerged as one of the few outlets in Central Texas that offered post-war modern furniture and decorative arts. Operating initially from a tiny storefront, Locker’s dedication to preserving iconic designs soon saw the business expand to multiple locations, solidifying its reputation as a sought-after dealer in the region.

The turning point for the enterprise came in 1996 when Locker, along with a partner, seized the opportunity to open a much larger store named Aqua on South Congress Avenue. With this expansion, Aqua broadened its focus to include authorized reproductions of classic modern furniture and lighting. Aqua became the first outlet in Central Texas to carry esteemed brands such as Herman Miller’s iconic “For the Home” line, along with offerings from Modernica, Vitra, and other renowned manufacturers. The combination of classic vintage inventory and modern reproductions caused Aqua to experience tremendous growth.

Beyond its role as a purveyor of exquisite modern designs, Aqua also ventured into various complementary services, including design consultation, home staging, film and television rentals, and consignment services. The gallery soon emerged as a center for public education, fostering an understanding of the historical significance of post-war design in Austin.

However, despite Aqua’s resounding success, external factors like skyrocketing rents, the economic downturn, and the loss of a business partner led Locker to make a tough decision in 2005. He decided to close the brick-and-mortar location and returned to the corporate world as a retail design consultant.

Yet, Locker’s passion for small business ownership and his dedication to the world of modern design never waned. In 2017, a fateful reunion with a college buddy who shared his vision breathed new life into his entrepreneurial dreams. The duo embarked on a location hunt, and soon after, Modern Redux LLC was born.

Today, Modern Redux stands as a testament to Locker’s unwavering commitment to post-war international modernism. The gallery houses an impressive collection of exquisite items, spanning from the iconic Bauhaus era to the mid-20th century and extending to the present day. Located at 8120 Research Blvd. Ste. 108, in the heart of Austin, the centrally-located gallery offers an ever-evolving array of captivating pieces inspired by art and design’s ever-vital Modernist Movement.

“We aspire to become Austin’s most trusted destination for the very best in post-war international modernism,” says Locker. With over a quarter-million worth of inventory thoughtfully curated and showcased, Modern Redux promises an exceptional experience for design enthusiasts and history aficionados alike.
